Sauerkraut

German Shorthaired Pointer

6 months, Male, Large

WISE is entirely volunteer-run and all of the donations made to our rescue go directly back to the animals in our care. By partnering with veterinary practices that support our work, we are able to save animals’ lives and restore them back to health. While some animals only need standard care, others require more extensive veterinary or behavioral care.

Regardless of which dog you are applying for, we are looking for adopters to support our program with a minimum donation of $850. The donation may or may not be directly applied to care of the dog you're adopting but rather goes toward supporting all of the dogs in the rescue. We appreciate the understanding of our potential adopters. Please keep this in mind prior to applying.

NAME:Sauerkraut

BREED:German Shorthaired Pointer

DOB: Mar 4, 2025 (5 months)

Home Recommendation: Sauerkraut will thrive in an active home that understands the needs of a high-energy, intelligent sporting breed. German Shorthaired Pointers are happiest when given plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and a “job” to do-whether that’s running, hiking, training games, or dog sports. A family committed to keeping him physically and mentally engaged will set him up for success. Prior experience with GSPs or other active hunting breeds is a plus.

Personality: Sauerkraut and his brother Bratwurst are two sweet and curious pups! While they may be a little unsure at first, once they feel safe and get to know you, their fun-loving, goofy sides shine through. They’re still discovering all the joys of being a dog - like toys, walks, and new adventures. These playful explorers would thrive in active homes where they can run, play, and continue learning what it means to be part of a loving family. Sauerkraut is a gentle soul who looks to his person for reassurance, often gazing up with the sweetest, and beautiful eyes that just melt your heart! He would really benefit from having a doggy sibling to show him the ropes and keep him company.

KIDS: Yes

DOGS: Yes

CATS: Unknown

Training: Sauerkraut prefers to go potty outside and is learning quickly with a consistent routine. At bedtime, he looks for a little extra reassurance and comfort, but once he feels safe, he settles in nicely.  He loves his chew toys or bones that happily keeps himself entertained. He’s currently learning how to crate train and learning how to walk on a leash. He is still a young pup and will benefit from consistent training, structure, and patience as he learns the basics.

WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Puppy mills overbreed to the point where they produce more dogs than they can sell. Dogs like Sauerkraut were rejected for reasons ranging from birth defects, being born with the wrong color fur or eyes, or just simply because no one wanted to purchase them. When the dogs are not sold, the puppy mills destroy them, and it is legal to do so. WISE has recently partnered with a group to save these unwanted dogs - healthy, unhealthy, and/or with birth defects - who are destined to be killed for no reason.
