WISE is entirely volunteer-run and all of the donations made to our rescue go directly back to the animals in our care. By partnering with veterinary practices that support our work, we are able to save animals’ lives and restore them back to health. While some animals only need standard care, others require more extensive veterinary or behavioral care.
Regardless of which dog you are applying for, we are looking for adopters to support our program with a minimum donation of $850. The donation may or may not be directly applied to care of the dog you're adopting but rather goes toward supporting all of the dogs in the rescue. We appreciate the understanding of our potential adopters. Please keep this in mind prior to applying.
NAME: Elphaba
BREED: Chihuahua x Scottish Terrier mix
DOB: Nov 5, 2021 (4 years)
Home Recommendation: Elphaba is a devoted little lovebug and would be happiest in a home where someone is around more often than not. She can be shy at first greeting, so she would do best in a quiet home with a patient family. She would thrive having another dog to show her the ropes.
WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Elphaba was rescued from a shelter in Chicago where she was surrendered by her family who could no longer take care of her. She’s now ready to start her new chapter in NJ with her forever home!
Personality: Elphaba's personality is all sweetness and affection—she loves her walks, adores curling up in a warm lap, and will never turn down a good belly rub. She’s happiest when she can be right by your side, following you from room to room just to be close. With a big love for treats and an even bigger love for her people, Elphaba is the perfect mix of cuddly, loyal, and delightfully attentive. She can be a little shy with new dogs at first and needs some time to warm up, but with a gentle introduction and a calm environment, she adjusts well. She’s currently doing great with her foster sister, showing that with patience and the right companion, she can happily share her space and settle in just fine.
KIDS: Yes, kids 10+
DOGS: Yes
CATS: Yes
Training: Elphaba is doing wonderfully with her training and daily routine. She sleeps soundly in her dog pen at night and walks beautifully on a leash, comfortably covering up to two miles. While she can be nervous around strangers and other dogs, she’s been making steady progress with slow, positive socialization. Her adopter should continue gentle, confidence-building experiences to help her feel secure. Elphaba is also a smart girl—she already knows how to sit and is eager to keep learning with patient, consistent guidance.
