Malachi

Labrador Retriever

a year, Male, Large

Malachi was found with his siblings on the side of the road by someone driving by. They stopped to pick up the puppies and discovered a deceased mom as well as some of the littermates. Four puppies were still alive. The person took them home and got them clean and fed. They were all very wormy and they tried everything they knew to do, but unfortunately 2 more of the puppies passed before reaching out for more experienced help. That person put them in touch with us at Bigbee. They met with one of our volunteers and she agreed to foster the 2 remaining puppies since they were so sick and needed more hands on care. Malachi and Magnolia Claire stayed with the foster for several months until they outgrew her space with the fosters she already had, so they had to move into our outdoor shelter as just babies. They had more room to play, but didn’t get the one on one attention puppies need. Fast forward a few months and Magnolia Claire got to get out of the shelter leaving poor Malachi behind all alone. Fast forward several more months just here recently and the threat of very cold weather was coming and the shelter volunteers began to prepare for all the dogs to go into a tiny building or into 1 of 3 overcrowded foster homes. Malachi got to go back to his original foster home! He has been an excellent house guest. He is dog friendly with all of the dogs in the resident and is submissive with the grouchy ones. He takes correction very easily from the pack. He is your typical goofy large Lab teenager. He has lots of energy and wants to play and run. He has thoroughly been loving the fenced in back yard where he can run and chase Lucetta the other cold weather foster. He is crate trained and only has had a few accidents in his crate since he has been in his foster home. He has had no accidents in the house and has not marked at all. He has excellent recall and loves to play fetch. We’re working on his manners and trying to teach him basic commands such as “sit”, “stay”, and learning not to jump up on people. His fosters think that he is a really good dog and with further training he’d make someone an amazing companion. He is UTD on vaccines, heartworm negative and is neutered. He has been with Bigbee and waiting on a home of his own since he was 8 weeks old. He came to us in April 2023.
