WISE is entirely volunteer-run and all of the donations made to our rescue go directly back to the animals in our care. By partnering with veterinary practices that support our work, we are able to save animals’ lives and restore them back to health. While some animals only need standard care, others require more extensive veterinary or behavioral care.
Regardless of which dog you are applying for, we are looking for adopters to support our program with a minimum donation of $850. The donation may or may not be directly applied to care of the dog you're adopting but rather goes toward supporting all of the dogs in the rescue. We appreciate the understanding of our potential adopters. Please keep this in mind prior to applying.
NAME: Kemper
BREED: Havanese
AGE: approx 1.5yrs
Home Recommendation:Kemper would thrive in a quiet, patient home, ideally with another dog to help guide him as he builds confidence. Due to his difficult past, he can be slow to trust new people and will need a loving family dedicated to showing him all the wonderful things life has to offer. He would do best with an experienced dog owner who understands his need for patience, reassurance, and gentle encouragement.
Personality: Kemper is a gentle, laid-back pup who enjoys lounging on the couch and taking cozy naps. While he is still learning to trust, he is slowly warming up to belly rubs and affection from his humans. As he gains confidence, he is beginning to enjoy outdoor adventures. He finds comfort in his crate, where he happily chews on bones and plays with his toys. One of his favorite pastimes is TV nights where he will snuggle up in your lap. With time and love, Kemper will continue to blossom into a devoted and affectionate companion.
KIDS: Above the age of 12 since he can be startled by quick, sudden movements.
DOGS: Yes, he loves other dogs.
CATS: Unknown
TRAINING:Kemper is slowly adjusting to leash walking, practicing a little each day. However, he can become nervous and shut down on walks, so patience is key. He is trained to use wee-wee pads. He enjoys sniffing around the apartment, but he tends to retreat to his crate when feeling overwhelmed. With time, love, and gentle encouragement, he will continue to blossom.
WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Puppy mills overbreed to the point where they produce more dogs than they can sell. Dogs like Kemper were rejected for reasons ranging from birth defects, being born with the wrong color fur or eyes, or just simply because no one wanted to purchase them. When the dogs are not sold, the puppy mills destroy them, and it is legal to do so. WISE has recently partnered with a group to save these unwanted dogs - healthy, unhealthy, and/or with birth defects - who are destined to be killed for no reason.
