Meet Zena 🖤

Zena is a beautiful 4-year-old Shepherd/Lab-type mixed breed weighing approximately 45–50 pounds — the perfect medium size for someone looking for a companion that’s not too small, but not too big. Her sleek black coat shines in the light, accented by a lovely white patch on her chest that makes her even more striking.

But it’s her heart that truly stands out.

Zena is the definition of a gentle, loyal companion. When meeting new people, she isn’t shy — she’s calm, soft, and welcoming. During a recent visit, she quietly leaned in for pets and even gave a sweet, gentle lick on the hand, as if to say thank you. It’s impossible not to fall for her.  She has that wonderful “Velcro dog” quality — happiest when she’s near her person. She enjoys getting out and being around people, but she carries herself with a calm, steady presence rather than over-the-top energy. She’s affectionate without being pushy, connected without being clingy.

When Zena arrived from a high-intake shelter in Texas — where heartworm is unfortunately common — she tested positive for heartworm as part of our routine screening. The good news is that heartworm is treatable and not contagious (it’s transmitted only through mosquito bites). Canine Collective will cover the cost of her treatment, which includes three veterinary visits over approximately four months.  During that time, Zena simply needs a loving foster or foster-to-adopt home where she can stay calm and comfortable while she heals. Given her naturally gentle and mellow personality, she’s likely to be an easy and grateful houseguest.  At 4 years old, she’s past the puppy chaos but still young enough for walks, adventures, and new experiences once treatment is complete. She offers that perfect balance of maturity and engagement.

If you’re looking for a devoted, gentle soul who will sit beside you, look up at you with those warm eyes, and love you quietly and completely — and you’re willing to help her through this temporary chapter — Zena may be your girl.  And if you just can't let her go after her treatment is complete, we would of course be delighted to make it permanent.  Apply at www.caninecollective.org
